Nipissing University iLEAD Jamaica Expedition 2017

Professors Natalya Brown and Linda Piper, along with a team of 8 Nipissing University School of Business students, travelled to a village 40 minutes outside Montego Bay in Jamaica from February 21-28, to learn about business and apply the skills and knowledge they’ve gleaned in class to real business situations. The goal of this year's trip was to look for opportunities for micro-financing and then submit a business case to the Rotary club, including the names of Rotary clubs in the are who could be potential partners.

The business case is to describe how the project:

  • Is sustainable (i.e. long-term success once Foundation funds have been spent)
  • Has measurable goals
  • Aligns with one of Rotary's Areas of Focus
  • Responds to real community needs
  • Actively involves Rotarians and community members
  • Meets the eligibility requirements in the Foundation Grant's Terms and Conditions

The business case will be reviewed by the club's World Community Service & International Literacy Committee, and a decision then made to provide up to $1,000 to support a micro-financing project in Jamaica.

The iLEAD Business Experience Certificate is a unique way to Learn through Experience, Action and Discovery. It offers business students the opportunity to earn credits toward their degree through directed study, honours thesis, workplace internships, overseas study and service to others, all in an effort to provide "more than a degree”.

This year marked the sixth consecutive year that students have travelled to the North coast of Jamaica. The iLEAD Jamaica Expedition is one of the many options students have through Nipissing’s iLEAD Business Experience Certificate.
