PRESIDENT'S REMARKS
President Natalie MacDougall

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month.

At last week’s meeting, someone had left little Canada Flag pins at each place setting. I have since learned that those pins came from Tim Salidas – it was a nice surprise!  Thanks Tim for your thoughtfulness!

The 15 of us who will be heading to the district conference at the end of October had a great meeting on Monday night to discuss our costume strategy – thanks to Trudy for leading this initiative on this one!

Last week, the Past Presidents committee finalized the criteria for the North Bay Rotary Club Bursary for a social work student at Nipissing University.  This stems from a gift from the North Bay Rotary Club of North Bay in November 2008. Through the Ontario Trust for Student Support Program, funds were available to match this gift in order to support the establishment of endowments.

Finally, I want to recognize a very active committee within our club, the “Bingo committee”, which includes Rotarians and former Rotarians who help out at the BINGO STUFFING and/or at the COGECO TV STUDIO (4 members each week) and/or are involved with the distribution/pick-up of the TV BINGO envelopes that take place every Thursday.

The number of people attending the BINGO STUFFING meeting varies from 34 to 40 or so – there are 7 BINGO STUFFING meetings per year. In addition to Rotarians, a number of children and teenagers join in to get their volunteer hours completed. Special thanks to friends of the Rotary Club of North Bay, including Dave Saad, Steve Sarlo, Jeff Serran, Helena and Marty Brown, and Arne Schmidt for their time and commitment to this fundraiser!

Of interest, our local Rotaract club will be joining other Rotaract clubs in the district for a tree trekking adventure in Huntsville this weekend.

Rotary polio plus singers are reminded that the next rehearsal is at Trudy’s home next week - Tuesday, Oct. 4th at 7:00pm and the final one at the Davedi Club on Wed Oct. 12th at 7:30pm.

The city has invited Rotarians to take part in the design workshop for the North Bay Downtown Waterfront Master Plan – September 27th at 1 p.m. at the North Bay area museum (second floor, 100 Ferguson Street); you must confirm your attendance by today. As well, Rotarians with an interest in the King’s Landing Wharf and Marina are invited to a Public Information Centre October 4, 2016 from 5 to 6 at the City Hall Rotunda.

REMINDER: The regular meetings for October 17th and 24 are being cancelled to facilitate your participation in the upcoming Polio Plus dinner on October 14th at the Davedi Club (between 11:30 and 13:00 - $30 per ticket) along with the 3-Club Wine and Cheese Mixer at Cecil's Map Room, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per ticket person.
PROGRAM

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Melanie McVeety, ESL Teacher with the Near North District School Board provided an overview of the program. Ten students and two volunteers also were in attendance.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is free for immigrants and to those Canadians whose mother tongue is not English. Adult students may register and begin classes at any time during the school year (September - June). This is a very flexible program offered to adults. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of each student whether at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level. The personal approach to education, combined with a balance between academics, social skills, Canadian culture and Canadian language development, will prepare the learner for future academic studies, employment and living in Canada. This program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Immigration (MCI). For ESL students that do not qualify under MCI, a fee for service is possible dependant of enrolment.

The local program was originally located at Chippewa Secondary School and recently moved to the Laurentian Learning Centre.

The number of students in the program at any given time averages around 40 students, from up to 19 different countries. This poses some  challenges for the program's  one teacher, over and above dealing with students at different levels in their language skills. This is where having a core of volunteers to help out with small groups and one-on-one sessions is key. Anyone interested in volunteering for an hour or more a week is more than welcome to contact Melanie at melanie.mcveety@nearnorthschools.ca. Besides volunteering in the classroom, there is an opportunity to assist with field trips geared towards giving the students the opportunity to experience all things Canadian - such as sugar bush operations.

The program works very closely with the North Bay & District Multicultural Centre.
