PRESIDENT'S REMARKS
"Rotary Vocational Service Month"
President Natalie MacDougall

This past Thursday, Chuck and I attended the Kiwanis club’s meeting at the Legion along with other service clubs to hear about the upcoming Armed Forces Days celebrations starting June 15th. As I’ve mentioned before, it will be a memorable weekend for North Bay!  Unfortunately, this is a busy period for the Rotary Club of North Bay with our Rose Day deliveries, which will affect our ability to help with volunteers.  The organizing committee will keep us posted on opportunities for us, as they become available.

On Friday, Tom “the birthday boy” Tucker and I met with young professionals from the Nipissing University to talk about their ILEAD program. We discussed how we might be able to work together with the students from their business program to develop micro-financing opportunities for entrepreneurs in under developed areas, including Jamaica.  The next team of business students will be heading to Jamaica near the end of February, to assess whether or not such opportunities could be explored.

You may recall that in the past, we have hosted Group Study Exchange teams. Those teams are now called Vocational Training Teams. Thanks to an email from Brian Menton, you’ve recently seen that District 7010 is organizing a Pilot Project partnership with the Educational Faculty of Trent University, Peterborough.  They are looking for a Rotarian in good standing to lead a VTT to Cambodia in April 2017 for three weeks to help with teacher training. The Team Leader must have teaching experience. The Team Leader will be selected through an interview process that will be held Saturday March 11, 2017.  Applications should be sent electronically to PDG Brian Menton, Chair of the District 7010 VTT Committee by February 24, 2017 to bvmenton@gmail.com.

Finally, one of the many changes that occurred at the last Rotary International Council on Legislation (COL) was to have Rotary International deal with Resolutions on an annual cycle rather than dealing with them every three years. Resolutions are an opportunity for clubs and Districts to express opinions and make recommendations to the Rotary Board of Governors.

There are two documents in both French and English under the title Council on Legislation on our District website. One outlines how Resolutions can be proposed and the other is the form that must be filled out and submitted to Brian Menton.

There are two important dates that must be adhered to. The District must approve a Resolution. For this to happen all Resolutions must be sent to Brian by March 30, 2017. This will allow them to be passed during the District's Annual General Meeting that is held as part of our Rotary Weekend in early April. If the District passes a Resolution they must get the form to Rotary International by June 30, 2017.
PROGRAM
Smart and Caring Communities
Kate Merritt-Dupelle, North Bay and Area Community Foundation

Kate provided an overview about the NBACF and then outlined the Foundation's newest initiative called "Smart and Caring Communities Fund". This is the Foundation's contribution to the Governor General's challenge - a call to action and invitation to community foundations to build a "smart and caring nation" as Canada approaches its 150th birthday. The goal is to raise $150,000 locally by July 1st. All contributions will support initiatives that will improve organizations from a wide spectrum of areas; arts & culture, physical well-being, mental health, the environment, youth, animal care and more.
