Happy New Year to you all! And a special welcome back to Past President Gisèle Lynch, who has recently retired and rejoining our Rotary family.
Over the holidays, I was approached by a reporter at the Nugget to contribute to an article about “the importance of service clubs”, but the reporter never followed up with me for an interview. I subsequently read the Nugget articleand was a bit disappointed that the Rotary Club of North Bay did not get a chance to provide input, since our club (along with the Rotary clubs of North Bay Nipissing and Rotaract) are vibrant, active, youthful, and making significant contributions to our community’s wellbeing, which is contrary to the messaging in the article. To set the record straight, service clubs like ours are attractive to young and old alike – we offer fellowship, networking, an opportunity for leadership skills development, giving back to the community and purpose. Thanks to all of you for making Rotary so fulfilling for me!
I am pleased to announce that Jeff Gilligan will be joining our club as our first Corporate Member. Jeff is Division Manager - Business Development with Walker's Van and Storage, at the company's North Bay office. His sponsor is Jeff Celentano.
Don Coutts arranged a meeting with some of the services clubs in the North Bay area in the Library Auditorium on January 5, 2017 to share information on the Catch the Ace project and seek their involvement. It was a great opportunity for like-minded individuals who care about the community to talk about the best way to address that community’s needs. If this works out, together we will be a strong force in doing good! Interested organizations are to get back to Don by January 20th.
My final note is about the strength of the Rotary network – Wilf Wilkinson (former RI president now 87) likes to maintain contact with some of his Rotary friends during the holiday season. When the email he sent to PDG Peter Hudson bounced back, he asked his son to follow-up with us. Jeff Rogerson followed up with Dino Dottori who was able to provide an update on Peter and contact information for Peter’s wife Pat, so that Wilf could communicate with her directly. The world is smaller than we think – thanks to Rotary, we’ve got friends everywhere.
