David Blevins will be talking about the SS Kewatin

The Keewatin now stands not only as the last remaining Great Lakes Passenger liner, but as the last of the Edwardian built passenger liner steamships in the world. Representative of a bygone era and an attention to craftsmanship and opulence we won’t soon see again, the “Kee” is a true symbol of growth and development in North America and a treasured piece of Canadian history.

The Rotary Club's motto is "Service Above Self". The Rotary Club of North Bay instills this philosophy of unselfish volunteer service in both its members and the community at large through the implementation and promotion of various projects.

The Club wants to ensure the youth of North Bay become aware of the benefits of volunteerism. Although we promote youth leadership through International Youth exchanges, we have not specifically promoted the values inherent in our motto with the youth of North Bay.

As part of our promotion of volunteerism, we will once again be honouring a grade ten or eleven student from each secondary school in North Bay that best exemplifies "Service Above Self".

The keynote speaker this year, Hanna Puustinen (17), from Finland, the club's 2019-2020 Youth Exchange Student, will share her recent experience, as a team member of the 14th Hispaniola Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Team (HHART). HHART missions are supported, organized and led by Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach and Area, District 7010. The team's primary mission is to improve the lives of poor and disadvantaged people (primarily of Haitian heritage) living near Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, by providing much needed medical, dental and other forms of humanitarian assistance. Hanna is attending West Ferris Secondary School this year, werhe she is participating in regular classes, the cross country ski team and theatre.
