Rosa Ramírez Nuñez sews backpacks and bags to sell to tourists. In partnership with CATIE, a group of women living near Turrialba, Costa Rica, launched an ecotourism cooperative to attract visitors and grow their community-based tourism businesses. CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) is an international organization focused on education in science, community development, and sustainability in Latin-America and the Caribbean. Members of Rotary clubs in Cartago, Costa Rica, and in Denton, Texas, USA, partnered with CATIE to support the project through a Rotary Foundation global grant. The grant provides support for training in business skills and aquaponic gardening, and the development of an ecolodge for tour groups and training. 08 December 2019. September was a busy month and October continues with some great meetings planned.  Here is what is happening in October:

Oct 5th meeting - induction of 3 members: Jesse Reid, Rebecca Morin and Robyn Jackowski.  We want to highlight that welcoming new members is a major milestone for our Rotary family. Strong attendance at these induction meetings makes a huge difference in showing our support, so high turnout is very much appreciated and warmly expected. Let’s encourage everyone to make an extra effort to attend this Monday to give Jesse, Rebecca and Robyn a warm welcome.

Oct 12th - no meeting - Happy Thanksgiving!

Oct 19th - Merv Shantz - he will give us a presentation on the North Bay Winter Games

Oct 26th - Dr. Tuomi - he will give us a presentation on the North Bay Cardiac Foundation

The annual District Conference was held in Peterborough and it was a great weekend - packed with incredible speakers and presentations by various clubs in our district to showcase their projects using both District Grants and Global Grants!  Of course, one of the highlights was the Youth Exchange presentation and Olaia was there and she was a great ambassador for our club!

Registration site is now open for next year's Conference in Sudbury.  Register early for a reduced fee!

We sponsored the Children's Program last year for the Capitol Centre and based on the success of the program, we are sponsoring the program again this year.  We will have Katina Connelly and Lisa Krueger from Capitol Centre at our meeting on Monday where we will present them with the $35,000 Big Cheque for the 2026-2027 program.

President Jeff has asked to have as many members as possible come out right after our Monday meeting to Open Arms Cafe at 305 Main St. E. to do the official presentation of the new cooler our club purchased to help them with their meal prep.  Please come out right after the meeting for the presentation.

We do a lot of good in our local community through a lot of hard work by our members.  Rotary is an international service group and there are so many amazing international projects around the world.  Our club's International Service Committee supports a few different countries such as:  Guatemala, Nepal and Dominican Republic and others.  A few of our members have taken part in international trips to help in projects and I wanted to share that the HHART date is now booked so if anyone wants to take part in this, please contact Steve Wallace at:  steve@HHART.org.

Ask any of us that went last year for details as well.  I have gone for 15 years - every year - so can let you know what to expect!
