WEEKLY BULLETIN
October 4, 2024
Monday, Sept. 30th was National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  The day honoured the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools as well as their families and communities.  Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Thank you to Maurice Switzer for sharing his family's story!

Our newest member, Rhyan Tourout, was formally inducted and gave us his vocational talk.  We learned about Rhyan's family and work history plus his years of giving back to the community as well as his reasons for joining Rotary.  His dedication to service will make him a great addition to our Club - Welcome, Rhyan and thank you for sharing your story.

We are having an off-site meeting on Monday, October 7th at the Capital Centre.  Patricia Spencer will give us a presentation and lunch is being catered.  Please make sure to bring your $20 in cash with you.  We do need to know if you are attending to ensure we have enough food to feed you if you would like a lunch so if you have not let me know that you are coming, please do that today.

I had sent out the proposed revised bylaws to all members so please do review and let me know of any issues/questions.  One item that came up was attendance - Rotary International changed the constitution to eliminate the mandatory attendance and our constitution has this change as well.  The bylaws do state the attendance rules are as per the constitution so there is no mandatory attendance for the weekly meetings - in order to keep your membership active, attendance at a meeting or committee work once per Rotary year will ensure you are shown as an active member.  We will have the vote to accept these new bylaws on October 28th.

The Foundation committee is planning an event  for World Polio day - more details to follow.  World Polio Day is October 24th.  The goal for our club is to raise $1500 U.S. towards the fight against Polio.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is matching any funds Rotary raises by 2 so please think about either setting up a monthly payment plan to Polio Fund or a one time donation.  If you have any questions on how to set up your monthly payment or are able to donate towards the campaign, please let either Ghislaine Cote or Yvonne Weir know.  Polio has been identified in Gaza due to the war but with Rotary's help, 650,000 children have been vaccinated.

Youth Exchange is one of the best programs Rotary has.  Our club has had some amazing exchange students over the years but due to COVID we have not taken part in Youth Exchange for some years.  We are going to restart the YEX (Youth Exchange) program for 2025 and hope to have one exchange student.  In order to make this program work, we do need families willing to host the student for a minimum of 3 months.  This means we would need 3 host families.  If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting, please let Bill Hagborg or myself know.  We are going to be hosting an information night on October 28th at the North Bay Public Library from 7-9 P.M.
